Medical Evacuation

Provides comprehensive, end-to-end management of international and domestic air ambulance services

Members who require evacuation services—domestic or international—receive medical transport via medically equipped aircrafts (either a fixed-wing aircraft or a helicopter). American Health’s Medical Evacuation phone line is answered live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by our experienced, dedicated staff of Care Coordinators who have the knowledge and skill to verify benefits and eligibility coverage, identify the destination facility, select and coordinate with the air ambulance carrier, and negotiate with non-participating providers to minimize claims cost.

We provide communications upon admission and during confinement, and offer assistance upon discharge if members are admitted to a skilled nursing facility or inpatient rehabilitation hospital, or are, for safety reasons, required to remain in a hotel prior to returning to their home country. Our program also facilitates communications to the health plan administrator.

A core competency of American Health’s Medical Evacuation team is lending logistical support to help navigate complex immigration guidelines and international entry requirements. Our on-call staff is knowledgeable on U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Border Patrol requirements for incoming medical evacuation aircrafts at all U.S. international airports, as well as other countries' requirements for receiving a patient from another country. After the member has arrived safely at the destination facility, the case is referred to Case Management.

With experience in managing more than 350 successful medical evacuations completed, American Health is well qualified as a “one-stop shop” to manage the costly, complex services associated with medical evacuations.

  • Serves as a safety net by ensuring quality of care for members who have a medical emergency while traveling internationally or within the U.S. for work or personal reasons.
  • Around-the-clock worldwide travel coordination provided by our experienced clinical team of Medical Evacuation Care Coordinators.
  • Program matches a patient’s needs and condition to the best method of transport, e.g., medical escort by commercial airline, air ambulance, and medical transport.
  • Door-to-door service includes coordination and facilitation of pre-trip preparations and ground transportation services.
  • Medical Escort service provides assistance for members traveling to or within the U.S. for non-critical care, members who are stable enough to fly on a commercial flight, expedited transplants, and for repatriation.
  • Cost savings are achieved on the overall medical evacuation trip fee and when the member is transported to a facility in network and through negotiations for out-of-network providers.
