American Health's Medical Evacuation program provides end-to-end management of international and domestic air ambulance services when required medical care is not available at the individual's current location. American Health's staff of knowledgeable and experienced Medical Evacuation Care Coordinators oversees the complex process of transporting ill or injured individuals to a location where they can receive appropriate care.

The Medical Evacuation product provides comprehensive services for what is often a lengthy, expensive and time-sensitive process. American Health's Care Coordinators are experts not only in ensuring quality of care for people who have a medical emergency while traveling, but also in realizing cost savings for benefit plans. The team has managed around 400 cases since 2007, and nearly 100 of these cases took place in 2011 alone.

"Our team navigates the complications that come along with medical transports, which are everything from arranging the medical air ambulance company and medical flight team, securing emergency visas, medical parole documents, admission to the receiving hospital, and permission to exit and enter various countries," said Lynda Davis, Vice President at American Health, who manages and is part of the Medical Evacuation team. "In addition to providing quality care to people who have a medical emergency while traveling, we provide savings to the benefit plans through negotiations with air ambulance carriers and referrals to network facilities."

As part of the Medical Evacuation product, American Health's team also provides Medical Escort services to assist patients in traveling on a commercial carrier when they are medically stable and an air ambulance is not necessary. Typically these patients require oxygen, basic monitoring, administration of medications and hygiene assistance.

American Health's Care Coordinators obtain medical clearance from the commercial airline, organize flights and ground transportation, and arrange care by experienced clinical staff, who accompanies the patient and monitors their care throughout the trip.
