American Health History

American Health Holding, Inc. (American Health) was founded in 1993 as a privately held company by Ivan Gilbert, M.D., and Michael Reidelbach in Worthington, Ohio. At a time when health costs were on the rise, many employer-sponsored health plans were looking for alternative solutions to provide members with coverage at affordable prices. As a result, there was an increased need for cost containment practices and improved managed care integration throughout the health care industry.

Dr. Gilbert, a licensed physician, and Michael Reidelbach, an entrepreneur with diverse industry experience, shared one common vision: To provide saving opportunities while managing appropriate care. With a small team of Utilization Management Nurses and Case Managers, American Health built the foundation of its core competences. The mission remains the same as it was in 1993 – to deliver flexible medical management services that support cost-effective, quality care planning for members.

Today, American Health is a single-source provider of comprehensive, integrated health management solutions that support millions of members across the health care continuum. Its flexible solutions, highly qualified physicians, registered nurses and social workers have helped clients maximize cost savings while ensuring the quality and appropriateness of care.

American Health was acquired in April 2006 by Prodigy Health Group, whose operating companies provide benefits management, total health management, provider network services and insurance services to self-funded employers, managed care companies and insurers across all industry sectors.

In June of 2011, Prodigy Health Group was acquired by Aetna, Inc. American Health operates as an independent subsidiary of Aetna (NYSE:AET).
